Soccerclips' Goals of the Week 3

Added: 08.09.2008 02:41

Well, well, well. We are back again with another round of goals that will leave you more stupefied than Stephen Ireland's psychologist after a 90 minute session. So without further ado, let's proceed to the latest edition of Soccerclips' Goals of the Week!

10. Joe Cole, England (view goal here)
It took a play of some quality for the Three Lions to break down the resolute Andorra defense, and it was the substitute Cole that rounded it all off. Joleon Lescott knocks a long ball onto the path of Cole, who proceeds to lash a powerful volley home, much to the relief of England supporters in attendance.

9. Gabby Agbonlahor, England U-21s (view goal here)
The Aston Villa youngster makes a great case for a call-up to the full England squad with his goal against Portugal. After cleverly beating the offside trap, he rushes toward the Portugal end and evades a defender and the keeper before slotting the ball into the net.

8. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Germany (view goal here)
The match may have been over as a contest early in Liechtenstein, but the show may as well have just started as far as the Bayern star was concerned. He follows the trails of a header and punts the ball ahead a split second before the keeper could get a touch on it; the result was Germany's fourth score of the night.

Schweinsteiger: Easy come, easy go

7. Antonio Di Natale, Italy (view goal here)
Only one week after bagging a magical goal against Palermo, di Natale does it again with his first goal against Cyprus. Collecting the ball on the left side, he suddenly finds himself with all the time and space in the world; he uses both to full effect, unleashing a low drive that goes by everybody and into the net. More from di Natale in a moment.

6. Kengo Nakamura, Japan (view goal here)
The Japanese midfielder produces a cracking goal out of nowhere within minutes of being brought in as a substitute versus Bahrain. He takes the pass from the left, and almost on a whim, fires up a shot from well outside the box that nearly ripping the netting out of the goal. More from this match (and from the other Nakamura on the Japan side) later.

5. Eidur Gudjohnsen, Iceland (view goal here)
The stalwart of the Icelandic side comes to the rescue with a very well-struck that left Norway stunned. From the set-piece just off the edge of the box on the left, Gudjohnsen launches a laser-like shot which evades everybody including the keeper, drawing Iceland level at 2-2 and salvaging a point on their travels.

4. David Villa, Spain (view goal here)
The Spanish hero once again lives up to his billing as one of the best strikers in the game today. Timing his run to a through ball with utmost precision, he latches onto the ball and evades the onrushing keeper in the same motion, then squeezes in a classy finish from an air tight angle to give Spain the lead at home.

Villa: Confirming his class once more

3. Luca Modric, Croatia (view goal here)
One of the rising stars of football provides another glimpse into his untapped potential with a cracking goal for his country. His shot from just outside the box is struck with such unbridled power that it bounces out of the goal almost as soon as it goes past the helpless keeper.

2. Shunsuke Nakamura, Japan (view goal here)
The man with a penchant for the dramatic that has not been seen on Japanese shores since the heydays of Godzilla and Ultraman puts on another magnificent act with this trademark free kick. He lies in wait for what seems like an eternity after Endo plays dummy, then finds the perfect moment to fire a low, driving shot; the ball jets under the Bahrain wall, past the outstretched arm of the keeper, and into the back of the net to open up the scoring for Japan.

1. Antonio Di Natale, Italy (view goal here)
Speaking of the dramatic, not even Nakamura's goal could match the aesthetic and practical appeals of Italy's late winner against Cyprus, which was scored by... yes, you guessed it, Antonio di Natale. Gilardino controls the ball on the edge of the box, plays the perfect heel pass to Camoranesi, who then proceeds to knock a majestic lob pass to di Natale; the Udinese star makes no mistake whatsoever with his volley which finds itself into the goal, and into the prestigious position of Soccerclips' Goal of the Week.

di Natale: The hero in blue
